Mistress, the feminine counterpart of master.

A mistress is a man's long-term female sexual partner and companion who is not married to him. The relationship generally is stable and at least semi-permanent.

A mistress is not a prostitute. There is also usually an emotional and possibly social relationship between a man and his mistress, whereas the relationship to a prostitute is predominantly sexual. Today, however, the word mistress is used primarily to refer to the female lover of a man who is married to another woman; in the case of an unmarried man it is usual to speak of a "girlfriend" or "partner."

Mistress is an old form of address for a woman. The title did not distinguish between married and unmarried women.

Mistress is a woman who takes the dominant role in bondage and discipline, dominance and submission or BDSM.

Mistress as in schoolmistress, or female school teacher.
